BWXT's $25,000 Donation Ignites Future Welding Talent at MVHS in memory of John Haynes

BWXT

In a tribute to the memory of John Haynes, BWXT has generously donated $25,000 to Mount Vernon High School's welding program. John Haynes and General Manager, Nate Foote, have played pivotal roles in establishing this program at the high school, which is staffed by BWXT employees and offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on welding experience. With the help of BWXT employees, the program offers students an exceptional opportunity to develop valuable welding skills and gain real-world experience. The curriculum covers a wide range of welding techniques, safety protocols, and industry standards, ensuring that students receive comprehensive training.

The program stands out with its direct link to BWXT, offering a clear pathway for students to transition from the classroom to a career. This unique collaboration between the high school and a prominent industry player like BWXT not only prepares students for the workforce but also addresses the growing demand for skilled welders in the manufacturing sector.

BWXT's donation of $25,000 to Mount Vernon High School's welding program is a powerful testament to their commitment to education and the improvement of the community. This generous contribution will have a profound impact on the program, allowing it to invest in state-of-the-art welding equipment, safety gear, and additional educational resources.

BWXT's involvement with the MSD of Mount Vernon is more than just philanthropy; it's a partnership that fosters growth, learning, and real-world opportunities. We extend our deepest gratitude to BWXT for their visionary support and commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled welders.

Celebrating Success: The Power of Small Wins

Celebrating Success: The Power of Small Wins

In the world of education, success is often associated with big milestones like high test scores and top rankings. At Marrs, we realize the value of celebrating both small and large successes in a student’s journey.

Small successes, whether they involve a student mastering a challenging concept, improving their grades, or simply displaying kindness and leadership, are worth celebrating. These small wins often go unnoticed but play a pivotal role in a student's overall development. By acknowledging and celebrating these achievements, our goal is to create a  positive and nurturing environment that motivates students to strive for more.

Emphasizing small successes helps students build self-esteem and confidence. Students learn that progress and growth are valuable in and of themselves, regardless of the scale. This perspective shift encourages a growth mindset, where students are more inclined to embrace challenges and view setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth.

Large successes, such as winning a championship or achieving top academic honors, still have their place in the school environment. These accomplishments are important milestones that provide students with goals to work towards and reasons to persevere. However, celebrating small successes helps students build a foundation of resilience, determination, and a passion for learning that enables them to tackle more significant challenges.

Students at Marrs Elementary celebrate small successes through rewards such as Positive Office Referrals or Shop With the Principal. Shop with the Principal is a monthly citizenship reward program celebrated each month. Classroom teachers select one student from their room who has exhibited excellent citizenship or shown great improvement in their classroom work. These students are honored and recognized by receiving a classroom visit from the Principal and her shopping cart filled with treats and prizes. Students are also recognized on our school's Facebook page. Positive Office Referrals are “shoutouts” that any staff member can fill out and turn in! The idea is to replace the negative stigma associated with the visits to the principal with an opportunity for students to anchor positive outcomes from their “above and beyond” behavior choices. Students are recognized with a trip to the Principal’s office but for a good reason.

By acknowledging and encouraging students at every step of their journey, schools prepare them not only for academic success but for life as well. In the end, it's not just about reaching the finish line but also about savoring the entire race and the small victories that make it worthwhile.

Parent Power: Building Stronger School Communities Through Involvement and Volunteering

Marrs-Burgoo-2023

I wanted to take a moment to emphasize the significance of fundraising in our school community and how your participation can make a meaningful difference in the educational experience of our children. Fundraising is not just about collecting funds; it is a powerful means to enhance the quality of education, provide resources, and create opportunities for our students to thrive.

Here are a few reasons why your involvement in fundraising matters:

  • Enhancing Educational Programs: Fundraising enables us to offer enrichment programs, and specialized learning opportunities that can broaden your child's horizons.
  • Community Building: Participating in fundraising activities fosters a sense of community among parents, teachers, and students. It's a chance to connect, collaborate, and strengthen the bonds that make our school a special place.
  • Teaching Responsibility: By involving your child in fundraising efforts, you teach them the importance of giving back and being responsible citizens. It instills values of empathy, generosity, and community involvement that will serve them well throughout their lives.

We understand that life can be busy, and your time is valuable. However, even small contributions, whether through volunteering, donating, or participating in fundraising events, can collectively have a profound impact on our school. We encourage you to get involved in any way you can. Our upcoming Burgoo event is a great opportunity to get involved.  Your support, in whatever form it takes, will be greatly appreciated and will make a lasting difference in the lives of our students.

Thank you for being an integral part of our school community and for your commitment to the education and well-being of our children. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.

Please use the link below if you would like to sign up to volunteer on October 14th!

A Vibrant Community

community

A school is more than just a physical space for learning; it's a community that shapes the lives of students and families. Marrs Elementary takes pride in its tight-knit community, where students, parents, teachers, and staff come together to create a supportive and nurturing environment. Regular events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-teacher interactions foster open communication and collaboration, ensuring that every stakeholder plays a role in the growth of the students. We encourage you to join your child's classroom communication platform if you haven't already; google classroom, Bloomz, Class Tag, and Class Dojo are some of the platforms our teachers use. Joining our Facebook page will give you a peek inside our school with snapshots of classroom happenings, communication about different events, and regular reminders. Last but not least, we encourage you to get involved. If you are interested in getting involved with our PTO, our next meeting is on August 23rd at Hawg N Sauce- 6:00 PM all are welcome! We look forward to a wonderful year!

Best,

Welcome Back!

Fvx1vs-WYAEy2h_20230802-165648_1

Welcome back to an exciting new school year! I hope you and your families had a restful and enjoyable summer. As we prepare to embark on this academic journey, I am thrilled to share some fantastic news with you – our school district has been officially STEM Certified by the Indiana Department of Education!

This remarkable achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to providing the highest quality education to our students. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education plays a pivotal role in preparing our young learners for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Through a dynamic and innovative curriculum, we are dedicated to nurturing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, and a love for exploration within each child.

This prestigious certification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our exceptional teachers, staff, and students. It would not have been possible without the strong support and collaboration from our parents and local community partners. Your involvement and engagement in your child's education make all the difference, and we are deeply grateful for your continued partnership.

As we enter this new school year, we remain committed to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment where each student can thrive and grow. We will continue to implement the best practices in education, incorporating innovative teaching methods and technologies to make learning engaging and relevant.

I am excited about the possibilities that this school year holds, and I look forward to witnessing the growth and achievements of each and every student in our district. I encourage our students to take advantage of our many extracurricular offerings to help enhance their educational experience.

Notice: Free Meals for All Students

School-Cafe-3.2

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved all schools to offer free lunch to all students regardless of income. Those schools that offer breakfast will be able to offer free breakfast to all students as well. This means students will receive their meals for FREE this school year.
Some things to keep in mind:

• Students must take the required components to make a reimbursable meal in order for it to be free. How students make a reimbursable meal will be posted/displayed in the cafeteria or during meal delivery. The cashier or other school staff will help students take a full reimbursable meal.
• If students purchase extras (such as a bottled drink) available in the serving line, a la carte (such as a singular milk or entree), snacks from vending machines, etc., the student will be charged for these items. If your student intends to purchase items other than a meal, please make sure there are adequate funds on their account.
• Nothing needs to be sent to the school in order to have a student receive meals for free. Free meals are automatically offered to all students regardless of income.
• Families that believe they would qualify for free and reduced meals normally, should still submit a free meal application as this can help with qualifying for other assistance programs for the family and student. Benefits from completing applications stretch far beyond the cafeteria and impact students in the classroom and at home. All information submitted in these applications is private and confidential.
